Slow Moments, Stronger Connections & How Coffee Grounds Fit In

We live in a world where a fast pace is the norm and "bigger and better" is our unofficial mantra. Yet we desperately seek connection, simplicity, and happiness. While I’m not suggesting we go back in time, I do believe there’s value in reprioritizing how — and what — we focus our time and energy on.

There are days when I’m knocking off my “to-do” list with ease, feeling happiness and a sense of accomplishment for running through it all. And then there are days when I toss my checklist out the door, have that extra cup of coffee, or take the longer loop on my afternoon walk. I believe both are equally important and critical to fulfilling a happy life.

I didn’t know I would get so deep on a Monday — especially since I started this blog to talk about composting your used coffee grounds! But maybe there’s a message in that: sometimes we need to get a little derailed to continue forward. I digress.

We already know the benefits a great cup of coffee can have on our health — but did you know your used coffee grounds can also serve a powerful purpose in your garden?

Composting coffee grounds offers several amazing benefits:

  • Adds essential nutrients: Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, a key ingredient that helps plants grow strong and healthy.

  • Improves soil structure: When mixed into compost or directly into soil, coffee grounds help improve drainage and water retention.

  • Boosts microbial activity: Grounds encourage the growth of beneficial microorganisms, which naturally enrich the soil.

  • Attracts helpful earthworms: Worms love coffee grounds, and their activity helps aerate and fertilize your garden.

  • Repels certain pests: Coffee grounds can deter unwanted visitors like slugs and snails.

  • Reduces waste: Composting used grounds keeps them out of landfills and puts them back to good use.

So next time you go to toss your coffee grounds in the hustle and bustle of life, I hope you’ll take an extra moment to save them — to reduce waste, connect with nature, and find joy in the simple moments.

Cheers,
Michelle
